The University of Zurich and ETH Zurich created the Network Suicide Prevention to help students and employees who are having a crisis or suicidal thoughts. The “active observers” in our network are able to recognize and address the signs and to help a colleague or student find professional help. These empathetic observers work in their regular jobs at the various institutes, departments, and faculties at both institutions.
During studies, pressure to perform can trigger a serious crisis, leaving the affected person and their environment unable to deal with the situation on their own. A crisis can also become so ingrained that thoughts of suicide – or even suicide attempts – arise. In such cases, it is absolutely necessary that someone from the affected person's social network intervenes.
